Intel has released a new processor that can be upgraded using a piece of software. The new Intel Pentium G6951 dual core processor has 4MB of L3 cache but only 3MB of that are usable. The other 1MB as well as HyperThreading can be unlocked through the use of an activation code.
These upgrades will however come at a price. Intel has attached a $50 (R350) fee for this once-off upgrade. The processor itself will sell for $100 (R700) and is aimed at the low-end market and enterprises interested in a cheap processor powerful enough for the average office worker. The idea is that enterprises will be able to upgrade their PCs without the need to tamper with the hardware.
