Will they DO it right?
Well after a few years of talking Telkom has finally launched its 3G network. Telkom has done its homework and the pricing is far cheaper than Vodacom and MTN. Telkom’s 3G service is based on a 3G HSDPA and HSUPA wireless network.
This means that it can support devices capable of 7.2Mbps downlink speed. In comparison Vodacom only has selected 3G HSDPA capable of 3.6Mbps download speed. Even though Telkom doesn’t bundle a 3G modem they do sell them separately.
The coverage is also the biggest problem and unfortunately its limited to selected regions in Gauteng. Telkom are offering a free SIM and no connection fee until the end of November 2008. Be warned however, the service is still under the trial banner until April 2009.
