Moral Kombat, a new movie from director Spencer Halpin, takes a look at violence in video games and the conflict between developers who are intent on creating games with violence and the possible ill effects playing violent games may have on users. It has been recently screened in San Francisco where it was followed by a discussion on the topics in the film by a panel.
The panel included Wired’s Chris Kohler, Dean Takahashi and Lorne Lanning from Oddworld Inhabitants as well as director Halpin. The comments from Tanner regarding the mainstream media’s constant focus on sensationalism when it comes to gaming (first reported at Gamepolitics.com) were of interest. He said:
“They (media groups) want the sensationalism. They will broadcast anytime there’s a shooting; they will find people that have a very specific, loud, sensational, fearful opinion of it, and they will give them prime airtime. If you add up those minutes of airtime it’s actually a fair amount of penetration into the public mind.”
