The rumour mill is a buzz with the news that AMD could be launching a 6-core Phenom II next year. The chip is rumoured to bear the codename “Thuban.” The new chip will supposedly have a clock speed of 2.8GHz and be manufactured using AMD’s 45nm process.
This rumour comes with the speculation that AMD is cutting production of several Phenom II and Athlon II processors. AMD is said to stop taking orders for several Phenom II X4 800, X3 700, X2 500, Athlon X4 600, X3 400 series processors with effect from next year.
Digitimes approached AMD for comments on its report about the launch and phase out. AMD refused to comment on the rumours.
