iTunes songs will be free of anti-piracy protection
An announcement this Tuesday bodes well for anti-DRM advocates all over the world as well as benefiting the consumer in general as Apple has dropped DRM from 8 million of the tracks available on iTunes.
This announcement was made at the Macworld conference by Phil Schiller, the production marketing executive who was standing in for Steve Jobs. While the DRM drop will be effective immediately, a further two million tracks will have the transfer-limiting software dropped from them by March in 2009.
This comes amid a general change in pricing structures from Apple regarding the available music on iTunes. Those who have previously purchased tracks from Apple that still include DRM will be able to get the protection removed upon paying a nominal fee.
