Google considers implementing an online method to check if you’re being throttled

Google has announced a plan that, once fully implemented, will allow users to check if certain Internet Service Providers are blocking traffic or slowing connections. The idea, aimed mainly at European and USA ISPs, seems to be another aspect of net neutrality that is under contention.

Google aims to provide researchers with data via some 36 servers around America and Europe, setting the groundwork for the eventual online-user checking up on ISPs. They are concerned, along with other content providers, that ISPs are wielding too much control over the Internet and that they may show favouritism to certain types of traffic.

Comcast, who was recently revealed as having blocked file-sharing networks inappropriately, are attempting to fight the complaint that was lodged with the FCC over their action. Their behaviour in that instance is the sort of thing Google is attempting to investigate.
