Video games are profitable

But not only for the folks making them

Electronic sports gaming events are growing in number and in profitability for those who play them. The number of sponsors overseas for various sports-based gaming contents is on the increase and the events themselves are heading towards being global rather than just isolated in specific territories.

EA is the main brand vendor for these events, with Madden NFL, NASCAR and NBA being the principal games for their events. Many of the main franchises are seeing roadshows in the US become a reality with cash prizes for the best gamers. 2K Sports, which competes against EA with branded sports gaming titles has also started getting in on the act.

One Eric Wright made approximately $180 000 in 2008 by competing in Madden contests in the USA. Television station ESPN hosts an American Football gaming contest with a cash prize of $100 000, in excess of R1 million in the local currency.
