Daniel Goncalves has been the first-ever person in the world to be arrested for domain name theft after he allegedly stole the domain P2P.com from its rightful owners and sold it to an unsuspecting domain name investor.
Gonclaves allegedly hacked into the email account of Albert and Lesli Angel and obtained the login details for the couples hosting account. Gonclaves then allegedly transferred the domain to an account he controlled and even falsified PayPal transaction records to make it appear as if the transaction had indeed taken place. Gonclaves then sold the domain for $110, 000 to Mark Madsen.
The Angles and their partner Marc Ostrofsky then filed a case of theft. When the police were unable to successfully investigate the case the Angels then hired investigators who specialise in cyber crimes. These investigators were able to gather enough evidence against Gonclaves and this allowed the Angels to pursue a civil suit in conjunction with the criminal case.
